Services Epidural Steroid Injections

Epidural Steroid Injections

Epidural steroid injections are minimally invasive procedures commonly used to alleviate pain and inflammation associated with spinal conditions. Administered by Dr. Olan, these injections deliver a combination of corticosteroid medication and a local anesthetic directly into the epidural space surrounding the spinal nerves. The epidural space is the outermost part of the spinal canal.

Benefits and Procedure

These injections are frequently recommended for conditions such as herniated discs, spinal stenosis, degenerative disc disease, and sciatica. The corticosteroid medication, often a potent anti-inflammatory, reduces inflammation and swelling around the spinal nerves, which can help alleviate pain and discomfort. The local anesthetic provides immediate pain relief by numbing the affected area.

During the procedure, the patient typically lies face down on a table, and the skin over the injection site is cleaned and numbed with a local anesthetic. Using fluoroscopic guidance or ultrasound imaging for precision, a needle is inserted into the epidural space near the affected spinal nerves. Once the needle is properly positioned, the corticosteroid medication and local anesthetic are injected.

Types

Interlaminar Epidural Steroid Injection (medial approach)

An interlaminar epidural steroid injection involves delivering medication into the epidural space between the vertebrae. This medial approach targets the center of the spinal canal, providing widespread coverage of the affected spinal nerves. It's commonly used to manage pain and inflammation associated with conditions like herniated discs and spinal stenosis.

Transforaminal Epidural Steroid Injection (lateral approach)

A transforaminal epidural steroid injection delivers medication directly into the epidural space near the affected spinal nerve roots. This lateral approach targets the nerve root as it exits the spinal canal, providing precise delivery of medication to the source of pain and inflammation. It's often used to treat conditions like radiculopathy (sciatica) and herniated discs.

Caudal Epidural Steroid Injection

A caudal epidural steroid injection involves administering medication into the epidural space near the sacrum (tailbone). This approach provides broad coverage of the lower spinal nerves and is commonly used to manage pain and inflammation in the lower back and legs caused by conditions such as lumbar disc herniation and spinal stenosis.

Conditions Treated by Epidural Steroid Injections

Epidural steroid injections are utilized to alleviate pain and inflammation associated with various spinal conditions, including:

  • Radicular pain
  • Herniated discs
  • Spinal stenosis
  • Osteoarthritis

Benefits

The benefits of epidural steroid injections include:

  • Pain relief: Provides significant pain relief for conditions like herniated discs and spinal stenosis.
  • Reduced inflammation: Corticosteroids decrease inflammation and swelling around spinal nerves.
  • Improved functionality: Enhances mobility and functionality, making daily activities easier.
  • Minimally invasive: Outpatient procedure with minimal invasiveness.
  • Non-surgical option: Offers an alternative to surgery for eligible patients.
